Orbera – Gastric Balloon

On July 28th, 2015 the FDA approved the ORBERA Intragastric Balloon System. Much like ReShape, Orbera is a weight-loss system that uses a gastric balloon that occupies space in the stomach. The balloon is placed into the stomach through the mouth, using a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, while the patient is under mild sedation. Once in place, the balloon is filled with salt water (saline) so that it expands into a spherical shape. The balloon can be filled with different amounts of saline (from 400 to 700 cc) to best match the patient's body structure.

How is Gastric Balloon different than other weight loss programs?

The Gastric Balloon is the most innovative weight loss product on the market today and is a highly reliable option that promotes continued success. This minimally invasive procedure is not a diet program, nor does it require surgery or a strict diet pill regiment. The New York Bariatric Group recommends that patients consider all their options when deciding on the best weight loss plan for them.

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Throughout the first three months of treatment, patients will typically see the most substantial weight loss. Once the gastric balloon is removed, ideally the weight loss continues throughout the entire process.
