OVERCOME OBESITY AND GET BACK IN THE GAME OF LIFE
Obesity is a medical condition where excess fat accumulates to an extent that it starts to harm your health. It is commonly caused by excessive food intake, genetics and lack of physical activity. Few cases are caused by medications, mental disorder, genes, and endocrine disorder. You can prevent obesity by making a change in your lifestyle. You can also use medications along with a suitable diet to reduce appetite or decrease fat absorption. If none of these are effective, you may be a candidate for a gastric balloon or bariatric surgery.

THE GASTRIC BALLOON
If you are looking for a non-surgical procedure to help you lose weight, then the FDA approved gastric balloon or weight loss balloon may be the right option for you. Gastric balloon, also known as stomach balloon is an inflatable medical device that is placed into the stomach to reduce weight. It is the go-to option when diet and exercise have failed you. The balloon limits the amount of food intake and creates a feeling of fullness. Less intake of food leads to weight loss. After a specified period, the device is removed using endoscopy. The placement of the balloon not only helps you lose weight but also lowers your risk of potentially serious weight-related health problems such as Heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Garber & his team at Tristate Bariatrics are some of the most experienced surgeons in gastric balloon placement in the country. He is one of the first few doctors in the country who was trained on the balloons.
There are two main types of non-surgical weight loss balloons.
- The Orbera gastric balloon
- The Obalon gastric balloon
The Obalon balloon capsule is the only FDA approved non-surgical gastric balloon system. It is a gas-filled weight loss balloon. You will swallow the pill which dissolves in the stomach to allow the capsule to expand. You will be asked to follow a device-assisted diet program and exercise which should be continued even after the balloon is extracted. Apart from losing weight, this procedure will significantly improve your cholesterol and lower blood pressure.

Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery includes a variety of procedures performed on people suffering from obesity. These procedures vary depending on your body mass index and your overall health condition. Weight loss is achieved through:
- Sleeve gastrectomy: removal of a portion of your stomach
- Gastric band: to reduce the size of your stomach
- Gastric bypass surgery: to resect and re-route the small intestine to a small stomach pouch
These procedures cause significant weight loss, helps one recover from diabetes, improves your cardiovascular risk factor and reduces one’s mortality rate. The different types of bariatric procedures can be grouped into three categories, blocking, restricting, and mixed.
Procedures such as the Duodenal switch block the absorption of food and reduce your stomach size. It is a restrictive procedure which requires you to take vitamins, dietary minerals, and long-term nutritional follow-up. Restrictive procedures such as Adjustable gastric banding (lap-band), sleeve gastrectomy, gastric balloon, take up space in your stomach or shrink the size of your stomach, making you feel fuller, in turn making you eat less.
Tristate Bariatrics does most of these procedures laparoscopically. We also offer other weight loss procedures such as the minimally invasive band and sleeve, banded plication, aspireassist, and medically supervised weight loss. We also provide surgery for adolescents. Revisional bariatric procedures include Band over the bypass, rose procedures and Stomaphyx for those who need additional assistance in losing weight post bariatric surgery.
At the Tristate Bariatric Group we are committed to our patient’s needs. Our dedicated team of certified surgeons, doctors and staff work towards the safest and most effective weight loss journey possible.
