What is the Obesity Crisis for Youth & Teens?

The CDC has published startling statistics about the prevalence and growth of childhood and adolescent obesity. Their latest data shows that over the past 30 years, obesity rates of quadrupled for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19, growing from 5% to over 20%.

For adolescents who struggle with obesity, it is difficult to live a healthy lifestyle in the future as well. It’s been proven that obese teenagers are far more likely to be obese as adults, and as a result, will be at elevated risks for serious health problems, including heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even certain types of cancer.

Additionally, obesity has other detrimental effects on adolescents and teens. This includes damaging psychological and emotional strain and burden. Quality of life is reduced, along with a person’s actual life span and expectancy.

Many obese adolescents have tried to lose weight in the past, but have been unable to do so, or to maintain that weight loss effectively. That’s where a surgical approach can pay major dividends.

How can Bariatric Surgery be a Solution?

Tristate NYBG is proud to be working with St. Charles Hospital to offer weight loss surgery for teens between the ages of 16 and 18. St. Charles Hospital has received Comprehensive Center with Adolescent Qualification status via the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).

This ensures that the facility is equipped to deal with the needs of adolescent patients. Beyond providing the surgery itself, Tristate NYBG also offers a comprehensive bariatric program.

This addresses a wide range of psychosocial and nutritional issues along with medical and lifestyle factors, which are crucial to maintaining a healthier life. We even strive to ensure that parents remain educated and involved, as they play a key role in providing support and assistance for the lifestyle changes of their children.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a successful and effective procedure, providing equal to superior results compared directly with gastric bypass. In one study, patients lost 61% of excess BMI within one year of having the surgery performed. Tristate NYBG performs this procedure with the SILS technique, Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery. This further reduces the invasiveness, complication, pain and recovery time of the procedure.

By beginning a journey towards a healthier life from a younger age, obese teenagers who have always struggled with their weight are able to see wonderful benefits. This is seen from a physical and health standpoint, as well as from a mental and emotional standpoint, resulting in a healthier and happier life both now and far into the future.

What Should I Expect During & After the Procedure?

You will be placed under general anesthesia at the start of your procedure. During SILS sleeve gastrectomy, your surgeon will make only one external incision which will be used to insert all necessary surgical tools.

During the procedure, up to 85 percent of your stomach volume is removed. This is done along a vertical line, which is then sealed with stomach staples. With this approach, the gastrointestinal track does not need to be adjusted. This reduces the complexity of the actual procedure, while also reducing post-surgical risk of complication and side effects.

All surgical procedures, including this one, which utilize general anesthesia do carry certain risks. Beyond those, specific risks to sleeve gastrectomy include leaking along the stomach line, abdominal wall abscesses, and internal bleeding. The procedure is newer and therefore does not have the same lengthy track record of a procedure such as gastric bypass.

Your entire procedure will take two hours or less to complete, and most typically involves only one night spent in the hospital. Your surgeon will provide you with further recovery and care guidelines and timetables.

You will also need to follow careful post-bariatric surgery diet guidelines. We will provide you with detailed instructions for how to proceed, and beyond the initial post-surgery phases, how to maintain a healthy nutritional approach moving ahead.
