Lap-Band and Realize Band Adjustments

What is Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding?

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding works via the placement of an adjustable band over the top of your stomach. There’s only a narrow portion which connects your upper stomach pouch, now only 30 mls in size, to the rest of your stomach, restricting the passage of food. Simply put, you won’t be able to eat as much, and you’ll be able to lose a great amount of weight in a short amount of time.

The band itself is connected via tubing to an access port. This can be used at any point after your surgery to control the amount of fluid in the band, which will either tighten or loosen it.

Enhancing the effectiveness of the adjustable gastric band is the Endoflip technique, an innovative development. The Tristate New York Bariatric Group is proud of being one of the first and only clinics to provide it.

Benefits of the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band

The benefits of undergoing this procedure include, first and foremost, the loss of a great deal of excess weight. Just how much will you lose? Results vary from patient to patient, but typical figures include up to 50 or 60% of your excess weight within two years. One study followed 200,000 patients for a period of 15 years, and found that even after all of that time, the average maintained weight loss was 60 pounds.

You’ll look and feel better, reduce your risk of many serious health conditions, and even extend your life. Research shows that middle-aged obese adults will die at average 7 years earlier than their healthy-weight counterparts, with a 20% increased risk of death from all causes.

When you compare gastric banding to other types of bariatric surgery, it’s important to note another benefit — this is an adjustable and removable procedure with no permanent changes made to your body.

What to Expect During & After your Procedure

Your procedure will begin with you undergoing general anesthesia. Minimal keyhole incisions are utilized to insert the laparoscope and the surgical tools. The band is placed around your stomach, and the tubing and access port are all connected and placed as well. The tools are removed and your wound is closed, and the procedure can generally be completed in under one hour.

After your procedure, most patients can be released that day rather than spending any nights in the hospital. Thanks to your laparoscopic surgery, recovery time will be relatively quick, with reduced pain and restriction. We usually recommend a week off of work, and the resumption of light activities within several days.

We’ll provide you with more detailed care instructions when you’re discharged.
